WASHINGTON, DC (7News) — Italian conductor Alvise Casellati is on a mission to bring opera out of fancy concert halls and into public spaces.
He presented Opera Italiana is in the Air on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday night. The free performance featured new, modern pieces from Jordan Millar, a 15-year-old composer from Brooklyn, NY, who wrote an arrangement of "We Shall Overcome" for the New York Philharmonic in response to the pandemic and Black Lives Matter.
The event also highlighted a selection of the greatest hits from famous operas.
